The land itself was harsh and unforgiving, the Indians were always a trouble, and one man held his fate in his hands. Luke Short was known for his rugged, brave heroes who stood alone against great odds in their battle to build a country worth calling home. And it took those kinds of individuals to build America of the 19th century. This is not his best novel; it is written in first person--not my favorite way to write prose--but it is still worthy of reading, and more than once. It is authentic, real history being told.
